Intense Pulse Light Therapy Hair Removal
What is IPL?
The IPL is the acronym for Intense Pulsed Light Therapy. Currently this technology
is being effectively used to treat not only Hair Removal, but the various skin disorders
covered under the heading of Photorejuvenation. The sub categories include: Vascular
Rosacea & Broken Capillaries, Pigmented Lesions, Spider Veins (Telangiec-tasias),
Brown Spots (Solar Lentigo/Lentigines), Hyperpigmentation (Melasma).
How does the IPL Soft Light remove hair?
Highly controlled flashes of light energy are selectively absorbed by hair follicles
lying below the surface of the skin. The absorbed light heats the hair, which damages
and destroys the re-growth potential of the follicle - all without damaging surrounding
tissue. Hair follicles are usually in different growth cycles at different times
in relation to one another. Since the follicle must in active growth in order to
be affected by the laser, several treatments spread over 3 to 6 weeks are required
to assure the destruction of all hair follicles. What is reassuring about this technology
is that the risk of scarring or pigmentation changes is virtually eliminated.
Are there any possible side effects?
Side effects are rare. You may experience some slight reddening or local swelling
at the treatment site, but this typically goes away within hours. On rare occasions,
some blistering or bruising may occur, but typically resolves quickly. The skin
may also become lighter or darker following treatment, but will generally return
to normal within a few weeks. Limiting sun exposure before and after treatments
will minimize risk of complications.
What can I expect during a treatment?
It begins by trimming away the hair above the skin. You may be asked to wear dark
glasses to protect your eyes from the bright light. Next, a cold gel is spread over
the treatment area. The laser hand piece is then applied to your skin and pulses
of laser begin disabling your unwanted hair. When the gel is removed, much of the
hair is wiped off with it. The remaining hair in the treated area falls out over
a one to two week period.
Can all hair be treated?
Our state of the art IPL Soft Light offers you customized treatment according to
your hair color, texture and body location. Any hair with at least some pigment
in it (black, brown, red and even blonde) can be treated effectively.
Does it hurt?
Prior to the IPL application and area to be treated, a cooling gel may be applied
to the area to be treated in order to cool the top skin layer. In some areas it
is more effective not to use the cooling gel as it is not required. Beauty-Full’s
IPL Soft Light has its own cooling system delivered through the handheld applicator
directly onto the skin. The skin’s surface is numbed seconds before the light pulse
is delivered, making the treatment pain free. The treatment is more effective when
the gel is not used, however, for sensitive areas the gel may be preferable to many
clients. Once the handheld applicator is over the skin, the light energy heats and
damages the hair follicle, typically causing the hair to fall out from the follicle.
IPL technology allows our technicians to provide a procedure that is gentle and
non-invasive, with nominal side effects.
How large of an area can be effectively treated in one treatment session?
IPL can also treat very large areas at one time. Approximately 100 to 200 hairs
can be treated with each flash of the light so that large patches of hair on the
legs, back and chest can be treated quickly in a single session. It can also be
used for small delicate areas as well. Because of the length of time associated
with other hair removal treatments, such as electrolysis, IPL may be a fast way
to achieve a hair-free look. As with other similar procedures, multiple treatment
sessions are typically required for long-lasting hair removal.
Understanding Hair Growth:
Hair is in one of 4 stages of growth at any given time; Anagen, Catagen, Telogen
or Early Anagen. Hair's active growth phase is called Anagen. During Anagen, the
hair contains an abundance of melanin. Catagen is the regression phase when the
lower part of the hair stops growing but is not shed, and the follicle is reabsorbed.
The resting phase is called Telogen, during which the old hair falls out in preparation
for the development of new hair. The pulsed-light treatments are most effective
when hair is in the active or Anagen phase when melanin is abundant. IPL hair removal
has excellent long term results. It is very effective and long term hair reduction
can be achieved after multiple treatments. It is necessary to return for treatment
at intervals of 3 to 6 weeks, depending on the area treated. This ensures that hairs
are more likely to be treated in the Active Growth Stage (Anagen) resulting in the
best results.
What happens immediately after a treatment?
Other than keeping the treated area protected from sunlight for a few weeks, you
can return to your full, normal routines immediately. Slight redness, similar to
mild sunburn, may occur, which usually disappears over a few days.
What are the side effects? The visible light is very safe with
so no special precautions needed apart from protective eyewear for the brightness
generated from flash lamp.
How do I prepare for treatment? Clients should avoid tanning 1
month ahead of the treatment and immediately after treatment the skin is particularly
sensitive to UV light and strong sunlight should be avoided for 4-5 days.
Do you need to shave prior to the treatment? Ideally, hairs should
be 1 to 2mm long when you come in for the treatment. Unshaven (long) hairs absorb
the light’s energy and prevent all of it reaching to the hair root. Therefore hair
should be trimmed before a treatment for maximum transmission of the energy. If
the hair is normally shaved and can be seen when shaven then please continue to
shave right up to the day of treatment. Although plucking and bleaching should not
be done. By avoiding any other form of epilating and waxing 4 weeks before the treatment
it ensures as many follicles as possible contain hair thus can be destroyed by the
light

How expensive is Laser Hair Removal?
Although the technology has evolved extensively since its invention in the mid 1960’s its basic elements have remained the same. A Caucasian (white pigmented person) averages between 7 to 12 laser hair removal sessions to eliminate unwanted hair. Non-Caucasians will require more sessions as their darker pigmentation absorbs some of the energy before it can travel down the hair follicle that ultimately destroys the hair’s root.
